The Story of St. Andrew Cathedral

How the Church Began

The St. Andrew’s church community started in 1949. About 65 families in the Washington, D.C. area were part of it. At first, they met in buildings they rented. Later, they bought and fixed up a building on 16th Street.

Building a New Home

In 1986, the church bought land in Silver Spring. They decided to build a new church there. The design for the church was in the Kozak Baroque style. This is a special type of Ukrainian architecture.

A Memorial Church

In the same year, 1986, a big nuclear accident happened at Chernobyl. The church was then dedicated to remember the people affected by this event. The church building was finished in 1987. It was officially opened and blessed on April 24, 1988.

Special Features of the Cathedral

The cathedral has some unique features. Above the main entrance, there is a mosaic of its patron saint, St. Andrew. A mosaic is a picture made from small pieces of colored glass or stone. The church also has five large domes on top. These domes are shaped like onions and are covered in gold.
