History of St. Andrew Cathedral

How the Church Started

The St. Andrew’s Church community began in 1949. About 65 families in the Washington, D.C. area were part of it. At first, they met in buildings they rented. Later, they bought a building on 16th Street and fixed it up.

Building the New Cathedral

In 1986, the church bought land in Silver Spring. They decided to build a new church there. The design for the church was in the Kozak Baroque style. This is a special type of Ukrainian architecture.

A Special Dedication

A very sad event happened in 1986. This was the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The church was dedicated to remember the people affected by this event. The building was finished in 1987. It was officially opened on April 24, 1988.

Cathedral Features

The cathedral has beautiful features. Above the main entrance, there is a mosaic of St. Andrew. He is the church's patron saint. The building also has five Onion domes. These domes are shaped like onions and are covered in gold.
