About St. Anthony Cathedral
The Cathedral of San Antonio de Huancavelica stands right in front of the main square, called the Plaza de Armas. This square is in the very center of Huancavelica. The city is part of the Huancavelica department.
History of the Cathedral
This cathedral was once known as the Mother Church of San Antonio. Its construction began with a group of people called the Tonsurados. The main building was finished in July 1608.
However, the work didn't stop there! The inside decorations, like the retablos (fancy altarpieces), paintings, and pulpits (raised stands for speaking), continued to be added and made perfect over many years. This means the church kept getting more beautiful for decades after it was first built.
