St. Charles Borromeo Church is a Catholic church located in Hailey, Idaho. It is a special place for people who follow the Catholic faith in the area. The church building and its nearby rectory (where the priest lives) are very old and important. They are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their history and unique design.
A Look at Its History
A priest named Father E.M. Nattini started helping people in the Wood River Valley back in the 1880s. Many people were moving to the area at that time. Father Nattini was able to collect money to build the first St. Charles church. Construction began on June 17, 1883.
This first church was very important. It was the first Catholic church built east of Boise, Idaho. Some people even call it the "mother church" for southeastern Idaho.
Church Design and Style
The church building you see today was designed by architects Tourtellotte & Hummel. They created it in the Gothic Revival style. This style often includes pointed arches, tall windows, and detailed decorations. Nicholas F. Wirtzberger built the church in 1913. It cost about $7,200 to build at that time.
One special part of the church is its metal belfry. A belfry is a tower where bells are kept. This one is made of stamped metal and has a fancy, balanced design. The church property also includes a building known as Father Keys House.
You can still see a window from the very first church building. It is located at the Reinheimer Barn on Highway 75. This barn is south of Ketchum, Idaho. The church and rectory were officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This listing included two important buildings on the property.
