St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church is a historic church building in Omaha, Nebraska. It was once a very important church called St. Philomena's Cathedral. A cathedral is the main church for a bishop in a specific area.
Both the church and its nearby rectory (where the priests live) are special. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are also recognized as Omaha Landmarks because of their history.
History of the Church
The church was built in 1908. It was designed in a style called Spanish Renaissance Revival. This style looks like old Spanish buildings. When it was first built, it was known as St. Philomena's Cathedral.
It served as the main church for the Diocese of Omaha. This continued until St. Cecilia's Cathedral was mostly finished in 1916. A famous Omaha architect named Thomas Rogers Kimball designed this beautiful church.
In 1958, the church's name was changed. It became St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. This was done to honor Frances Xavier Cabrini. She was the first American citizen to be made a saint by the Catholic Church.
The church was officially named an Omaha Landmark in 1979. It was then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is a very important historical site.
