Fun Facts and Festivals
In the mid-1980s, leaders in Saint George wanted to start a yearly festival. A local store owner, John Walters, found out something interesting. People in the upper part of Dorchester County, where Saint George is, eat more grits than almost anywhere else in the world!
So, in 1986, the first World Grits Festival was held. This festival happens in mid-April. About 10,000 people visit the small town for food, music, and games. Until 2019, the festival even had a contest where people rolled around in a big tub of grits! The goal was to see who could get the most grits to stick to them.
The festival happens every year. It was paused in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But it came back in 2022, bringing lots of fun to the town again!
