Interstate 95 (or I-95) is a very important highway in the eastern United States. It runs all the way from Miami, Florida in the south to the Canadian border in Maine in the north. This makes it a super long road, about 1,919 miles (3,089 km) long! I-95 connects many big cities along the East Coast. It's part of the Interstate Highway System, which helps people travel easily across the country.

History of Interstate 95
Many parts of I-95 used to be toll roads. This means drivers had to pay money to use them. Especially in the northeast, many sections were already built or planned as toll roads before I-95 was created. Some of these roads still have tolls today, but others have removed them.
Famous Bridges and Tunnels on I-95
I-95 crosses many cool bridges and tunnels. Some of these also used to have tolls.
- The Fuller Warren Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida, crosses the St. Johns River. It had tolls until the 1980s. A new bridge replaced it in 2002.
- The Fort McHenry Tunnel goes under the harbor in Baltimore, Maryland. It opened in 1985 and helps cars get across the water.
- The George Washington Bridge is a very famous bridge. It opened in 1931 and carries I-95 over the Hudson River. This bridge connects New Jersey to Upper Manhattan in New York City.
In 2010, there was a study to see if tolls should be added to I-95 in North Carolina.
Improvements and Upgrades to I-95
I-95 is always being improved to make it safer and easier to drive on. Many projects are happening along the highway.
Connecticut Upgrades
In Connecticut, I-95 is a very important road. Since the mid-1990s, there has been a huge plan to upgrade the entire highway there. This project will cost billions of dollars and is expected to continue until at least 2020.
- Sections of I-95 near Bridgeport, Connecticut were recently made wider.
- Now, work is focused on a 12-mile (19 km) section through New Haven, Connecticut. This includes replacing the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.
- Studies are also happening to widen another 60 miles (97 km) of I-95 from New Haven to the Rhode Island state line.
Southern States Improvements
States in the south are also working to improve I-95.
- There are plans to improve a 1,054-mile (1,696 km) section of I-95 from Petersburg, Virginia, all the way to Florida.
- Several states are working together to study how to widen and rebuild this part of the highway. The goal is to reduce traffic jams and make the road safer for everyone.
- In Florida, many widening projects have been finished. The section from the South Carolina–Georgia line down to Jacksonville, Florida now has six lanes.
- The road from Jacksonville to Daytona Beach, Florida was also expanded to six lanes in 2005.
- More widening projects are still happening in Brevard County, Florida and northern Palm Beach County, Florida.
Future Plans in Maine
In 2009, lawmakers in Maine had an idea to extend I-95 even further north. They wanted to use government money to stretch the highway to Fort Kent, Maine, which is Maine's northernmost town. This new route would go through towns like Caribou, Maine and Presque Isle, Maine. They believed extending the Interstate would help the economy in that area grow.
