The St. Ignatius Cathedral (also called Catedral de San Ignacio in Spanish) is a beautiful church in San Ignacio de Velasco, a city in eastern Bolivia. It is an important building for the Roman Catholic Church in the area.

History of the Cathedral

Building the Original Church

The construction of this church began a long time ago, in 1748. It was started by Jesuit missionaries, who were priests that traveled to different places to teach about their faith. The main building was finished in 1761.

Fire and Rebuilding

Sadly, the church was damaged by a fire in 1948. But people worked hard to rebuild it. The rebuilding efforts took place between 1998 and 2001, making sure this important building could be used again.

How the Cathedral is Used

Main Church of the Diocese

The St. Ignatius Cathedral is the main church for the Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco. A diocese is like a special area that a bishop oversees for the Catholic Church. This diocese was first set up in 1930 by Pope Pius XI.

Becoming a Diocese

Later, in 1994, Pope John Paul II made it a full diocese. This means it became an even more important center for the Catholic Church in that region. Today, Bishop Robert Herman Flock Bever is in charge of the church and its community.
