History of the Cathedral
Building the Original Church
The construction of this beautiful church began in 1748. It was started by Jesuit missionaries, who were priests and teachers. They worked hard to build this place of worship. The church was finally finished in 1761.
Fire and Rebuilding
Sadly, the church was damaged by a fire in 1948. This was a big loss for the community. However, people worked together to rebuild it. The reconstruction efforts took place between 1998 and 2001, bringing the cathedral back to its former glory.
How the Cathedral is Managed
Role of the Diocese
The St. Ignatius Cathedral is the main church for the Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco. A diocese is like a special church district managed by a bishop. This cathedral is the central point for Catholic faith in its area.
Changes in Status
Originally, this area was an "apostolic vicariate." This is a type of church territory that is not yet a full diocese. Pope Pius XI created it in 1930. Later, in 1994, Pope John Paul II changed its status to a full diocese. This was done with a special document called a "bull."
Current Leadership
Today, the cathedral and the diocese are led by Bishop Robert Herman Flock Bever. He is responsible for the spiritual guidance of the Catholic community in this region.
