What is the Roman Catholic Church?

St. Ignatius Church follows the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. This means it is part of the largest Christian church in the world, led by the Pope. The church in the Cayman Islands is overseen by a special group called the "mission sui iuris of the Cayman Islands." This group was set up in the year 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who was the leader of the Catholic Church at that time.

History of St. Ignatius Church

The story of St. Ignatius Church began with an earlier church building on Shedden Road, which was finished in 1959. Later, in 1971, a school connected to the church, called St. Ignatius School, was opened.

As the community grew, a new and larger church building was needed. Construction for the current St. Ignatius Church on Walkers Road started in 1981. This new building was completed and opened its doors in 1982.

Other Catholic Churches in the Cayman Islands

St. Ignatius Church is an important center for Catholics in the Cayman Islands. There is also another Roman Catholic church in the islands called Stella Maris Church, Cayman Brac. This church was established when a priest from St. Ignatius Church moved to Cayman Brac to help start a new community there.
