St. John's Episcopal Church and its Rectory are two old buildings made of logs in Jackson, Wyoming. A rectory is a house where a priest lives, but this one was also used as a community center. The rectory was built in 1911. The church building came later, in 1916. Both buildings are special because they are some of the biggest log structures in the Jackson Hole area.

History of St. John's Church

The First Rectory Building

The rectory was the first place in Jackson to have regular church services for the Episcopal faith. This started in 1911. Before that, services happened sometimes, but not regularly.

When the new church was built in 1916, the rectory became a place for people to stay overnight. This was very helpful for ranchers and visitors from "dude ranches" who lived far away. A dude ranch is a type of holiday ranch where guests can experience cowboy life. The rectory was also a popular spot for meetings and social events. It even had a library with over 1,000 books for the community!

The rectory is a 1 and a half story building. It has special windows called dormers that stick out from the roof. These dormers are also made from carefully built logs.

Building the Church

The church building was finished in 1916. It was built by two local people from Jackson, Butch and Ed Robinson. The logs used for the church were cut and prepared by George and Clarence Blain. Raul A. Imeson, a skilled carpenter, did the detailed finishing work.

Both the church and the rectory were designed in a style called "rustic". This style uses natural materials like logs and stones. It was very popular for buildings in national parks and for dude ranches at that time. The church is about 60 feet (18 meters) long and 24 feet (7 meters) wide. It has an open roof structure made of logs. Today, this 1916 building is called a chapel because a new, bigger church was built in 1995.

Other Buildings and Community Role

The church property also has a rectory built in the 1950s and a parish hall. A parish hall is a building used for church events and meetings.

St. John's Church also helps run the Chapel of the Transfiguration inside Grand Teton National Park. The church played a big part in starting the hospital in Jackson, which is now known as St. John's Medical Center.
