St. John's Episcopal Church and Rectory are two historic buildings made of logs in Jackson, Wyoming. A rectory is a house where a church leader, like a priest, lives. The rectory was built first in 1911. It served as a place for visitors to stay and a community center. This was under the guidance of Bishop Nathaniel Thomas, a leader in the Episcopal Church. Church services were held in the rectory until 1916, when the main church building was finished. Both the church and the rectory are some of the biggest log buildings in the Jackson Hole area.

A Look at the Rectory
The rectory was the very first place in Jackson to have regular Episcopal church services. These services started in 1911, though some had happened now and then since 1908. After the new church was built in 1916, the rectory became a hostel. A hostel is like a simple hotel. It offered a place for ranchers and guests from dude ranches to stay overnight. These people often traveled long distances to get to Jackson.
More About the Rectory's Use
The rectory was also a popular spot for meetings and social events. It even became a community library, holding over 1,000 books! The building is one and a half stories tall. It features carefully built log dormers, which are windows that stick out from the roof.
The Church Building
The church building was constructed in 1916 by Butch and Ed Robinson, who were local builders from Jackson. The logs used for the church were cut and prepared by George and Clarence Blain. Raul A. Imeson, a skilled carpenter, did the detailed finishing work.
Design and Style of the Church
Both the church and the rectory were designed in a style called rustic. This style was very popular in the area at the time. It was often used for dude ranches and buildings in national parks. The church building is about 60 feet (18 meters) long and 24 feet (7.3 meters) wide. It has an open roof structure made of logs. Today, this 1916 building is called a chapel. This is because a newer, larger church was built in 1995.
Other Buildings on the Site
The church property also includes a rectory built in the 1950s. There is also a parish hall, which is a community building made of wood. These two newer buildings are not considered part of the original historic complex.
Community Connections
St. John's Church also runs the Chapel of the Transfiguration. This chapel is located inside Grand Teton National Park. The church played a big role in starting the hospital in Jackson. That hospital is now known as St. John's Medical Center.
