The Chapel of the Transfiguration is a small, special church made of logs. It's located inside Grand Teton National Park in Moose, a small community. This chapel was built in 1925. It was designed so that a big window behind the altar perfectly frames a beautiful view of the Cathedral Group of mountains. St. John's Episcopal Church in Jackson owns and takes care of the chapel.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration
This chapel is more than just a building. It's a peaceful place designed to connect with nature. Its unique style and amazing view make it a popular spot.
What the Chapel Looks Like
The chapel area includes the main church building, a covered entrance with a small bell tower, and a storage shed. C.B. Loomis designed these buildings in a cozy, old-fashioned style. This style is called "rustic" or "Western Craftsman."
The entrance canopy lines up perfectly with the view of the Cathedral Group mountains. It also shelters a bell that you ring by pulling a chain. You walk on a wooden boardwalk to reach the chapel. The main door is made of special wooden planks with cool metal designs.
Inside, the chapel is shaped like a "T" and measures about 22 feet by 50 feet (about 7 by 15 meters). You'll see the natural log walls inside. There are pretty stained-glass windows on both sides. But the most amazing part is behind the altar. Instead of a stained-glass window, there's a large clear window. This window perfectly frames the stunning mountain view outside. A small room to one side is called a sacristy.
The Chapel's History
The Chapel of the Transfiguration was built to serve people visiting and working at the "dude ranches" nearby. These ranches were like guest farms where people could experience the cowboy life. They stretched north of Jackson, near the Teton Range mountains.
The land for the chapel was given by Maud Noble. She owned Menor's Ferry, a historic river crossing nearby. The chapel was built even before Grand Teton National Park was fully created in this area. The park was established in 1929 and later expanded to include Moose in 1950. The chapel's design was inspired by another church called Our Father's House in Ethete. Local ranchers helped build the chapel by providing materials, labor, and money.
A Movie Star Chapel
The chapel even appeared in a movie! It played an important role in the film Spencer's Mountain. This movie was filmed in Jackson Hole in 1963 and starred famous actors Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara.
On April 10, 1980, the chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes important historical places in the United States. Another similar chapel, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, was built in the park in 1958. It's also in a rustic style and is located near Signal Mountain.
