The Chapel of the Transfiguration is a special little church made of logs. It's located inside Grand Teton National Park in a small town called Moose. This chapel was built in 1925. It has a big window behind the altar that perfectly frames a stunning view of the Cathedral Group of mountains. The church is managed by St. John's Episcopal Church in Jackson.

About the Chapel

The Chapel of the Transfiguration is more than just a church building. It includes the main chapel, a covered entrance with a small bell tower, and a storage shed. C.B. Loomis designed these buildings. He used a style called "rustic" or "Western Craftsman." This style uses natural materials like logs to blend in with the beautiful outdoor setting.

Chapel Design

The entrance canopy helps guide visitors towards the chapel. It also provides shelter and holds a bell that is rung using a chain. To get inside, you walk along a wooden path. The main door is made of thick planks with decorative ironwork. The chapel itself is shaped like a "T" and measures about 22 feet (6.7 meters) by 50 feet (15.2 meters). Inside, the walls are made of exposed logs. Stained glass windows are on both sides of the chapel. The large window behind the altar offers a natural view of the mountains instead of a stained glass picture. A small room called a sacristy is located to one side.

History of the Chapel

The Chapel of the Transfiguration was built to serve people visiting and working at the dude ranches. These ranches were located north of Jackson, near the Teton Range mountains. The land for the chapel was given by Maud Noble. She owned a nearby place called Menor's Ferry. This happened before Grand Teton National Park was created in 1929. The park later expanded into the Moose area in 1950.

Building the Chapel

The design for the chapel was inspired by another church called Our Father's House. That church is at the St. Michael's Mission in Ethete. It is located on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Local ranchers helped build the Chapel of the Transfiguration. They provided materials, labor, and money for its construction.

Chapel in Movies

The chapel was featured in the movie Spencer's Mountain. This film was shot in Jackson Hole in 1963. Famous actors Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara starred in it.

National Recognition

The Chapel of the Transfiguration was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1980. Another similar rustic-style chapel, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, was built in the park in 1958. It is located near Signal Mountain.
