A Look at History
The church group started way back in 1834. It was first known as St. John's Parish. This was one of the first seven church groups in Florida. These groups joined the Episcopal Church in 1838.
Early Buildings and Fires
The very first St. John's Church was built in 1842. Sadly, it burned down in 1862 during the American Civil War. After the war, a new church was designed. Construction began in 1873 and it was finished in 1877.
But disaster struck again! In 1901, a huge fire swept through Downtown Jacksonville. This fire destroyed most of the city, including the church.
Building the Current Cathedral
After the big fire, people quickly started planning a new church. A new design was made in 1902. The current St. John's Cathedral was completed and officially opened in 1906.
St. John's is the only cathedral in Jacksonville. It is built in the Gothic Revival style. This style makes the inside look very grand and spacious. Beautiful stained-glass windows line the walls. These windows were carefully repaired and restored in 1983.
St. John's Cathedral School
The cathedral also helps run a school. The St. John's Cathedral School teaches young children. It has classes for infants up to Pre-K 4.
