History of St. John's Cathedral
The church group started way back in 1834. It was first known as St. John's Parish. This church was one of the first seven parishes in Florida. These parishes joined the Episcopal Church in 1838.
The very first St. John's Church was built in 1842. Sadly, it burned down in 1862 during the American Civil War. After the war, a new church was designed. This second church was finished and opened in 1877.
But disaster struck again! In 1901, a huge fire swept through Downtown Jacksonville. This fire destroyed most of the city, including the church. A new church was quickly designed the next year. This is the building that stands today. It was completed and officially opened in 1906.
St. John's is the only cathedral in Jacksonville. The inside of the building is very large and grand. It was built in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks like the big, old churches from medieval times. Beautiful stained-glass windows line the walls. In 1983, all the stained glass was carefully fixed and cleaned.
St. John's Cathedral School
The cathedral also helps run a school. The St. John's Cathedral School is for young children. It teaches kids from babies up to Pre-K 4 (four-year-olds). The school gets support from the church and other groups.
Clara's at the Cathedral Café
The church also has a special project called Clara's at the Cathedral Café. This café works with the School of Culinary Arts at the Clara White Mission. Every Friday, students from the culinary school prepare lunch. This lunch is sold to people from the community. It's a great way for students to practice their cooking skills. It also provides tasty and affordable meals for people working downtown.
