The Oaks Pioneer Church, once known as St. John's Episcopal Church, is a special old building in southeast Portland, Oregon. It is a one-story chapel that welcomes people of all faiths. This historic church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important building recognized by the United States government.
Built in 1851, it was added to the Register in 1974. It is the oldest church building still standing in Oregon.
About the Oaks Pioneer Church
The Oaks Pioneer Church is located in Oaks Pioneer Park. This park is in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland. The building is made with a "post-and-beam" style. This means it uses strong vertical posts and horizontal beams to create its frame. The church measures about 18 feet wide and 42 feet long.
How the Church Began
The church was originally part of a house. This house belonged to a pioneer named Lot Whitcomb. He was a steamboat operator who started the town of Milwaukie. The church was the very first Episcopal church in Oregon.
The church was first built on the edge of Milwaukie. In 1862, it was moved closer to the town center. Over the years, the church had some changes. In 1869, the chancel (the area around the altar) was updated. In 1888, the windows, outside walls, and bell tower were changed. The bell tower holds a ship's bell that once belonged to Lot Whitcomb.
A New Life for the Old Church
In 1948, a new church building took its place. The old church was then planned to be torn down in 1969. But some people wanted to save it. They raised money to move the church. It was floated down the Willamette River on a large boat called a barge. Then, it was placed in Oaks Pioneer Park.
Today, the Oaks Pioneer Church is a museum. People can visit and learn about its history. It is also a popular place for weddings.
