Church History: A Look Back in Time
The church in Clowne was first built way back in 1138. That's almost 900 years ago! When it was first built, it was called "All Saints." It stood on a special path that connected Mansfield and Worksop Priory.
Not long after it was built, the church's name was changed to St John the Baptist. The first person in charge of the church, called a rector, was John M. Leyaster. He was recorded in the year 1299.
Building the Tower and Adding Bells
The church's tall tower was built in the 1400s. Imagine how much work that must have been! Bells were added to the tower over many years. The first bell was put in place in 1591. Then, another was added in 1616, and the last one in 1812.
Changes and Special Memorials
In 1955, the church got bigger. New places were added for the choir, the special area called the sanctuary, and the organ. During this time, two new small chapels were also created. One was for children, and the other was a miners' chapel. This miners' chapel remembers the brave men who sadly lost their lives in the Creswell Colliery Disaster in 1950.
The church also has beautiful stained glass windows. These windows tell stories with colourful light. You can also see two paintings by an artist named Jean Baptiste Butatte. These paintings show "The Ten Commandments" and "The Ascension." The Creswell Colliery disaster is also remembered in one of the stained glass windows in the chapel.
Church Organ
The church has a special musical instrument called an organ. It's a pipe organ, which means it makes sound using many pipes. You can find out more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
Church Bells
The tower of St. John the Baptist's Church has a set of six bells. These bells were made in 1932 by a company called Mears and Stainbank. They are rung together to create music.
