The church follows the Roman Rite, which is a common way Catholics worship. It is part of the Catholic Church's special mission for Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha.
St. Joseph Church is one of only three Catholic churches in this territory. The others are on Ascension Island and St Helena. It is known as one of the most remote Catholic churches in the world.
History of St. Joseph Church
The current St. Joseph Church was built between 1995 and 1996. It replaced an older, smaller church that was built in 1983.
The Catholic faith first came to Tristan da Cunha in 1908. Two Irish women, Elizabeth and Agnes Smith, brought it to the island.
Today, some of the church's lay preachers are grandsons of Agnes Smith. These include Dereck Rogers, Anne Green, and James Glass.
