St. Lina, or Ste-Lina in French, is a small community called a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada. It is part of the County of St. Paul No. 19. This little place is home to the St. Lina Community Hall, where people gather. You can find St. Lina about 14 kilometers (about 9 miles) north of Highway 28. It is also about 85 kilometers (about 53 miles) southwest of a larger town called Cold Lake.

The Story of St. Lina

Early Trails and Travel

A long time ago, back in 1856, a person named Father Malsonneuve started an important journey. He and four men wanted to create a new path from a place called Lac La Biche. This path would go through areas that would later be named Sugden, Ste-Lina, and St-Vincent.

This new path quickly became a busy route. People used it to carry supplies to places further north, along the Athabasca River. The trail wound its way past where the hamlet of Mallaig is today.

A Place to Rest and Grow

The Lac La Biche trail went northwest, passing a farm that was owned by W. Christensen in 1978. It continued north to cross a small creek just east of Ste-Lina. Here, a camp was set up. This camp was a resting spot for travelers and a place to water their horses before they continued their journey.

As more settlers came to this part of Canada, they shared news about the furs and timber found in the area. Because of this, the number of people living there grew. Surveyors mapped out the land, making it ready for new settlers. These settlers, called homesteaders, could get land for a small fee of $10.00 if they met certain rules. This is how St. Lina got its name and became a hamlet. Other nearby places like Goodridge, Beaver River, Sugden, Boyne Lake, McRae, and Ashmont also grew into hamlets.
