Saint Mark United Methodist Church is a United Methodist Church located in midtown Atlanta, Georgia. The church building was constructed between 1902 and 1903. The church members, who were part of Merritts Avenue Methodist Church, built it because they needed a bigger place.
The building is special because it uses Stone Mountain granite. It also has a unique triple entrance and colorful stained-glass windows made with a special technique called pot-metal. This church is one of the few Gothic Revival style churches in Atlanta built with granite.
The building is recognized as an important historic place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also named a historic building by the City of Atlanta.
History of the Church
Building and Design
The architect who designed Saint Mark Methodist Church was Willis F. Denny. He also designed two other granite churches for the Methodist church. These other churches are still standing today.
The church members chose this location for Saint Mark Methodist Church carefully. They needed more space for their growing group. The new spot was also a safer area than their old location. Their previous area was called "Tight Squeeze" and was outside the city limits.
Stained Glass Windows
Twelve beautiful stained-glass windows were added to the church over many years. These windows show different stories from the life of Jesus. They were installed gradually between 1909 and 1959.
Growth and Renovations
In the early 1990s, the church almost closed down. However, many new people joined the church during that decade. By the end of the 1990s, the church had grown to more than 1,700 members!
The main part of the church, called the sanctuary, went through many renovations. These updates took 15 years to complete. The renovations were finished in 2008.
