History
Old St. Mary's
The very first Catholic church in Fredericksburg was a simple log house. It was built in 1848. Later, in 1861, a new stone building began construction. This new church was finished in 1863.
Today, this older stone building is known as Old St. Mary's. After 1906, it was used for different things, including a school. This building is important because of its connection to German immigrants in Texas. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1994.
St. Mary's Today
By 1901, the old church building was too small. The church needed more space for its growing community. A new church was designed by Leo M.J. Dielmann, an architect from San Antonio. Jacob Wagner was the builder. The new church was completed in 1906.
The current St. Mary's Church has many features of Gothic Revival style. These include strong supports called buttresses. It also has decorative trefoil shapes and a tall corner tower. Inside, the church has beautiful paintings and murals. These artworks cover the organ pipes and the ceiling vaults. Because of its amazing interior art, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a "painted church." It is also part of the Fredericksburg Historic District. This district is also on the National Register.
The church campus also includes Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. This church is located at 302 East College Street. It first opened in 1919. It closed in the 1940s, but reopened in 1983. Now, it serves as a mission of St. Mary's for people who speak Spanish.
