The land where St. Paris now stands was first home to Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in 1797.

How St. Paris Got Its Name

The village was officially started in 1831 by a person named David Huffman. He first called it New Paris, inspired by the famous city of Paris in France. However, he soon found out that another town in Ohio already had that name. So, he changed it to St. Paris.

The Impact of the Railroad

In the mid-1800s, a railroad was built near the village. This was a very important event for St. Paris. The Columbus, Piqua and Indiana Railroad opened in 1859. It made it much easier for farmers to send their products to other places. It also helped people travel.

The railroad changed hands over the years. It became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad and then Conrail. However, it was no longer used after 1983.

St. Paris officially became a village in 1858. Over time, it grew larger. Today, it sits across the border between Johnson Township and Jackson Township.
