St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church is a very old church building in Darke County, Ohio, United States. It is located south of the village of Versailles. This church is special because it is thought to be the last log church left in the area from when people first settled there.
Even though many early settlers in Wayne Township were from England or France, the people who built St. Peter's Church were from Germany. They built the church in 1850 on land given by Frederick Frengott Seibt. The church was built on the lower part of the land, and a cemetery was made on the higher part.
A Look Inside the Historic Church
The church has not changed much since it was built. The only big change was adding a small bell tower in 1867. Inside, the church still looks very much like it did long ago. You can still see the original wood-burning stove, a reed organ, a pulpit carved by hand, and the first sandblasted windows. These items help us imagine what church was like in the 1800s.
Why This Church is Important
In 1980, St. Peter's Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. It was added because its old architecture is well-preserved. It also shows how the area was settled long ago.
St. Peter's Church is one of four churches in Darke County that are on the National Register. It is the only one that is not a Catholic church.
