Versailles (pronounced ver-SAYLZ) is a small town, also called a village, located in Darke County, Ohio, United States. It is the only village in Wayne Township. In 2020, about 2,692 people lived there.

History of Versailles
Versailles was started in 1819. It was first named Jacksonville to honor Andrew Jackson. He was a famous general who won the Battle of New Orleans.
Later, many people living in the village were from France. They suggested changing the name to "Versailles." This new name would remind them of their home country. So, in 1837, the village officially became Versailles.
How to Say "Versailles"
The local people say the name ver-SALES. The second part of the word is stressed. This is different from how the city of Versailles in France is pronounced.
Geography of the Village
The United States Census Bureau says that Versailles covers a total area of about 1.88 square miles (4.87 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.026 square kilometers), is water.

In 2010, there were 2,687 people living in Versailles. They lived in 1,083 homes. About 686 of these were families.

Poultry Days Festival
Versailles is famous for its yearly Poultry Days festival. This fun event happens every June. It takes place on the second full weekend of the month.
The festival has many exciting activities. They crown a "Ms. Chick" and "Little Miss Chick." There is also a carnival with rides and games. A big parade marches through the village.
A highlight is the huge chicken dinner. They cook over 25,000 slow-roasted chicken dinners! The festival also hosts a big Ultimate Frisbee tournament.
Education in Versailles
The Versailles Exempted Village School District runs the schools in the area. It has one Elementary School, one Middle School, and one Jr./Sr. High School.
The main school building was completed in 2010. It is located at 280 Marker Road within the village. The people of Versailles paid for the school through their tax dollars.
