St. Rose Cathedral, also known as Catedral de Santa Rosa, is a very important church in the city of Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras. It is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán. This beautiful cathedral is named after Saint Rose of Lima.
History of the Cathedral
The first church building was constructed a long time ago. It was built between the years 1798 and 1803.
Earthquakes and Repairs
The church faced some big challenges over the years. A strong earthquake hit on November 21, 1877. This caused serious damage to the building.
In 1880, an architect named Francisco Martínez was hired. He worked to repair the cathedral. He rebuilt parts of it while keeping its original Baroque style. This style is known for being very detailed and grand.
Another powerful earthquake struck on December 26, 1915. This quake also damaged the cathedral. The repairs for this damage happened in 1916. This year was also important because the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán was officially started.
