The St. Rose Cathedral (also known as Catedral de Santa Rosa) is a very important church. It is located in the city of Santa Rosa de Copán in Honduras. This cathedral is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán. It is dedicated to a saint named St. Rose of Lima.
History of the Cathedral
Building the First Church
The very first church building was constructed a long time ago. Work on it started in 1798 and finished in 1803. This means it took about five years to build.
Earthquakes and Repairs
The church has faced some challenges over the years. On November 21, 1877, a strong earthquake hit the area. This earthquake caused serious damage to the cathedral.
In 1880, an architect named Francisco Martínez was hired. His job was to fix the damaged church. He rebuilt parts of it, making sure to keep its original baroque style. This style is known for its detailed and grand designs.
Later, on December 26, 1915, another powerful earthquake struck. This caused more damage to the cathedral. The repairs for this damage happened in 1916. This was also the same year that the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán was officially created.
