St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church is a historic building in Mobile, Alabama. It is now known as Prince of Peace Catholic Church. This beautiful building was designed by a local architect named James H. Hutchisson. He used a style called Gothic Revival. This style often includes pointed arches and tall windows, like old European cathedrals.
About the Church Building
The church building you see today was finished in 1874. It was officially opened on January 21, 1877. Before this building, there was an older wooden church on the same spot. That first church was built in 1847 but later burned down.
This building was originally the main church for the Saint Vincent de Paul Parish. A "parish" is like a local church community.
History of the Parishes
In 1911, another church community, St. Peter Claver, was started nearby. On December 25, 1970, the Saint Vincent de Paul and St. Peter Claver parishes joined together. They formed a new parish called Prince of Peace.
Later, a brand new Saint Vincent de Paul Parish was created. This new parish is in western Mobile County. It serves the area known as Tillmans Corner.
National Recognition
The original church building is very important. On April 24, 1992, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a special historic place in the United States. It was listed as part of a larger group of historic Catholic properties in Mobile.
