History of St. Albans Church
The church was designed by an architect named Louis Ambler. Its first stone was placed on November 5, 1910. This is called the 'foundation stone'. It was laid by the Duke of Portland. The church was officially opened, or 'consecrated', on July 2, 1911. The Bishop of Southwell, Sir Edwyn Hoskyns, led this important ceremony.
Later, in 1937, a new part called the 'north aisle' was added to the church. This addition cost £1,400 at the time. It was also officially opened on September 31, 1937.
In 1968, the church had a big fire. After the fire, the church was repaired and restored. It was able to open its doors again in 1969.
