A Look at St Alban's Church
The Church Building
St Alban's Church was built a long time ago, in 1898. A famous architect named Frederick de Jersey Clere designed it. He used a style called Gothic Revival, which looks a bit like old castles or cathedrals. This church is actually the second church built in Pāuatahanui.
In 1983, the church was officially recognized as an important historic building. Heritage New Zealand listed it as a Category 2 historic place. This means it has special historical value.
Its Place in History
Before the church was here, this spot was home to an old Māori village, or 'pā'. This pā was called Matai Paua. It was built in 1846 by Te Rangihaeata, a leader of the Ngāti Toa people. So, the land where the church stands has a very long and interesting history.
Visiting the Church
St Alban's Church still holds services every week. You can attend on Sundays at 11 AM. It's a place where people gather for worship and community.
