History of St Andrew's Church

How the Church Began

The story of St Andrew's Church started in the early 1860s. A small group of Scottish and American Presbyterians (a type of Christian church) began meeting together. They gathered near the famous Spanish Steps in Rome.

Building the Church

Their first church building opened in 1871. It was located close to an old Roman gate called the Porta Flaminia. The building you see today was opened in early 1885. It stands between two important places: the Piazza della Repubblica and the Palazzo del Quirinale.

What St Andrew's Church Looks Like

Unique Design of the Building

When the church was built, there was a special rule. The city only allowed it if the building didn't look like a church from the outside. Because of this, St Andrew's Church looks similar to other government buildings on the same street. It has a more official appearance.

The church building is set back a bit from the street. It has a small, enclosed courtyard in front. The building has four levels. The church itself takes up the entire ground floor. Above the church, there are offices and a home for the minister. There's also a large roof terrace with amazing views, even of Vatican City.

Inside the Church

The inside of St Andrew's Church follows the simple style of Presbyterian churches. It has a central pulpit, which is where the minister speaks. There isn't a lot of fancy decoration. The church uses movable benches, called pews. This means the main area can be changed for different events. It's often used for concerts as well as for church services.

You'll also find a special memorial inside. It honors Scottish soldiers who bravely served in the Italian campaign during World War II.

Community and Welcome

The people who attend St Andrew's Church come from many different countries. Services are held in English, but members speak many other languages too. Music and friendly gatherings are a big part of church life. The church is known for being very welcoming. It's a friendly place for people who live in Rome and for those just visiting.
