Completed 13th century

The Church of St Andrew is a very old church located in Compton Bishop, a village in Somerset, England. It was built a long, long time ago, in the 13th century. A special church leader named Bishop Jocelin officially opened it in 1236. Over the years, parts of the church have been repaired and updated. It is considered a Grade I listed building, which means it's a very important historical building that needs to be protected.

About the Church of St Andrew

Inside the Church

Inside the Church of St Andrew, you can see a very old pulpit. This is the raised stand where a speaker gives a sermon. This pulpit was made in the 14th or 15th century. It has beautiful designs called tracery panels. It also features carved decorations called friezes and fancy top edges known as cresting. People say it is one of the best pulpits in all of Somerset.

Above the pulpit, there is a large monument on the wall. It remembers a man named John Prowse, who passed away in 1688. It also mentions some of his children.

The Church Building

The church has a tall tower with two main parts. It has pointed decorations called pinnacles and a small stair turret. This tower was likely built around 1380. However, some experts think it might be from the 15th century instead.

The south porch, which is an entrance area, was added later. The church roof was also repaired in 1852. These updates were done by architects from Bath named George Phillips Manners and John Elkington Gill.

The Churchyard

Outside the church, in the churchyard, there is an old churchyard cross. This cross is also listed as a Grade II building, meaning it's historically important. You can also find two old chest tombs in the churchyard. These are stone tombs shaped like chests, and they are also Grade II listed.

Part of a Bigger Group

The Church of St Andrew is part of a larger group called the Crook Peak United Parish. This group includes several other churches in nearby villages. These villages are Badgworth, Biddisham, Christon, Loxton, and Weare.
