A Look Back: The Church's Story
The first stone for the church was put in place on March 29, 1864. A very important person, the Duke of Devonshire, helped with this special event. The church was designed by a famous architect named George Gilbert Scott.
Even though it wasn't completely finished, the church was officially opened on May 10, 1866. A bishop named John Lonsdale from Lichfield led the ceremony.
The church had a beautiful font, which is a special bowl used for baptisms. It was designed by Scott and carved by Mr. Hall from Derby. It was made of grey marble with colorful green and red marble columns.
Later, in 1880, work started on the church's tall tower and spire. These were finished and officially opened on December 30, 1881.
A famous musician named Ronald Binge used to sing in the church choir as a boy in the 1920s. He later wrote the well-known theme music for BBC Radio Four's 'Sailing By'.
In the 1960s, the church was no longer used for services. It was taken down in 1971. The people who used to go to St Andrew's then joined the church of St Osmund's Church, Derby.
Music at St Andrew's: The Organ
A musical organ was put into the church when it first opened in 1866. A brand new organ was installed in 1902 by a company called Forster and Andrews.
This organ was updated a few times. It was changed in 1919 by Nicholson and Lord, and again in 1928 by J.H. Adkins of Derby. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
