Discovering St Andrew's Church
St Andrew's Church started as a smaller "mission church" called the Good Shepherd. A mission church is like a smaller, temporary church that helps a community before a bigger church is built. It first opened in 1894 in a temporary building. It was connected to St. Mary's Church in Handsworth.
Building the Church: A New Design
The beautiful church you see today was designed by a famous architect named William Bidlake. He used the "Arts and Crafts" style. This style focuses on traditional craftsmanship and simple, natural designs. Building work began in 1907 and was finished in 1908.
The church was officially "dedicated" in 1910. This means it was set aside for religious use. It was then "consecrated" in 1914. This is a special ceremony that makes a church holy. At that time, it also got its own parish. A parish is a local area that a church serves. This new parish was created from parts of the areas served by St Mary's and St James' churches.
The Church Organ

The Church Choir
The church has a traditional choir. They wear special robes and help lead the singing during the main Sunday service at 10:00 am. The choir includes people of all ages.
