St Andrew's Church in Handsworth, West Midlands is a very old and important church. It belongs to the Church of England. This building is so special that it's a 'Grade I listed' building, which means it's protected because of its history and design.

The Story of St Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church started as a smaller 'mission church' called the Good Shepherd. It first opened in a temporary building in 1894. This was a mission church for St Mary's Church in Handsworth.

The church building you see today was designed by a famous architect named William Bidlake. He used a special style called Arts and Crafts. Building work began in 1907 and was finished in 1908. The church was officially opened in 1910. It became a full parish church in 1914. This happened when its own area was created from parts of the areas covered by St Mary's and St James' churches.

The Church Organ

St Andrew's Church has a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. It has two keyboards, called manuals. This organ was made by a company called William Bird and Sons from Selly Park. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.

The Church Choir

The church has a traditional choir that wears special robes. Their main job is to lead the singing during the Sunday service at 10:00 am. The choir has singers of all ages. They sing different parts, like soprano, alto, tenor, and bass (SATB). The choir performs traditional, classical, and modern songs. They also practice and sing a special song, called an anthem, every Sunday that fits with the service.
