History of St Andrew's Church

Building the Church

The first stone for the church was placed on March 29, 1864. This important event was done by William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire. The church was designed by a famous architect named George Gilbert Scott. The builders were Thompson and Fryer. Even though the church was not fully finished, it was officially opened and blessed on May 10, 1866. This blessing was done by Bishop John Lonsdale from Lichfield.

Church Features

The church had a special font, which is a basin used for baptisms. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott and carved by Mr. Hall from Derby. The font was shaped like an octagon and made from grey marble with fossils. It also had colorful columns of green and red marble.

Tower and Spire

Work on the church's tall tower and spire began later, in 1880. The tower and spire were also blessed by the Bishop of Lichfield on December 30, 1881.

Famous Connections

A well-known musician named Ronald Binge was a boy singer in the church choir during the 1920s. He later composed the famous theme tune 'Sailing By' for BBC Radio Four.

Church Closure

In the 1960s, St Andrew's Church was no longer needed for regular services. It was then taken down in 1971. The area that the church served, called its parish, joined with the parish of St Osmund's Church, Derby.

Church Organ

First Organ and Upgrades

When St Andrew's Church first opened in 1866, an organ was put in place. An organ is a large musical instrument often found in churches. Later, in 1902, a brand new organ was installed by a company called Forster and Andrews. This organ was changed and improved several times. It was modified in 1919 by Nicholson and Lord, and again in 1928 by J.H. Adkins of Derby. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.

Most of these bells (Bells One to Five, Seven, and the largest bell called the Tenor) were made by the Mears and Stainbank company in London in 1881. The Sixth bell had been made for the church earlier, in 1866.
