A Look Back: The Church's Long History
People believe there was a church or religious spot here even before the year 1108. The church building we see today started around that time. The oldest part you can still see is the west doorway, which is about 800 years old, from around the year 1200.
How the Church Grew Over Time
The church got bigger in 1470. New parts like the nave (the main area where people sit), a tower, and a chancel (the area near the altar) were added. The church was named after St. Augustine because it was connected to St. Augustine's Abbey in Bristol. Later, from 1542, it was linked to Bristol Cathedral. Sometimes, local landowners, like Katherine Morgan of Llanrumney Hall in 1603, helped collect money for the church.
Modern Updates and Changes
The church was given a big makeover in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It's thought that old graves in the churchyard were moved in the mid-1800s, as no gravestones older than that time can be found today. The church didn't even have electricity until 1931!
Rumney used to be part of Monmouthshire, but in 1937, it became part of Cardiff. However, the church still belongs to the diocese of Monmouth, which was its original county. The clock in the church tower was put in place in 1962. Most of the beautiful stained glass windows were made in 1915 by an artist named Charles Eamer Kempe. Two more special windows, called the Te Deum windows, were added in 1950. The church was officially given its "listed status" in 1975, recognizing its historical importance.
Celebrating a Millennium
In 2016, the church celebrated what was thought to be its 1000-year anniversary! Even though the exact age of the very first Christian presence there isn't known, it's clear that St Augustine's has been a special place for a very long time.
