St Augustine's Church, Rumney is a very old church located in Rumney, a part of Cardiff. It is a special building because it has been officially listed as a Grade II* heritage site. This means it's an important historical building. The church belongs to the Anglican faith and is part of the diocese of Monmouth.

History of St Augustine's Church

The church building itself dates back to 1108. However, people believe there was a religious place here even earlier. It might have been around for about 100 years before the current church was built.

Building Changes Over Time

The oldest part of the church you can still see today is the west doorway. It was built around the year 1200. The church became much bigger in 1470. At that time, new sections like the nave (the main part where people sit), a tower, and a chancel (the area near the altar) were added.

An interesting fact is that in 1603, a woman named Katherine Morgan from Llanrumney Hall was allowed to manage the church's affairs. This was unusual for the time.

The church underwent major renovations in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The churchyard, where people are buried, was cleared in the mid-1800s. Because of this, you won't find any gravestones older than that time.

Modern Updates and Features

St Augustine's Church did not have electricity until 1931. Imagine how dark it must have been inside!

Rumney used to be part of Monmouthshire. In 1937, it became part of Cardiff. Even so, the church still remains under the diocese (church area) of its old county.

The clock in the church tower was put in place in 1962. Most of the beautiful stained glass windows in the church were made in 1915 by an artist named Charles Eamer Kempe. However, two special windows, called Te Deum windows, were added later in 1950.

The church was given its special listed status in 1975. This helps protect it for future generations.

A Thousand Years of History

In 2016, the church celebrated what was thought to be its 1000-year anniversary. While the exact start date of Christian worship in this spot isn't known, it's clear that St Augustine's has a very long and rich history!
