History
Building the Church
The idea for St Barnabas’ Church started a long time ago. A kind lady named Miss Ryland gave the land for the church. The first stone was placed on 1 August 1859. This was the very beginning of building the church.
The church was designed by an architect named William Bourne. He used red stone from Hampstead and special Hollington stone for decorations. The building was finished in 1860. It was officially opened and blessed on 24 October 1860. This ceremony is called a "consecration." Building the church cost about £3,000, which was a lot of money back then!
Community and Schools
St Barnabas’ Church was not just a place for worship. It also helped the community. In 1862, the church opened schools right next to the building on Ryland Street. These schools were important for educating children in the area.
The church also had its own parish. A parish is like a local area that a church serves. St Barnabas’ Church got its own parish in 1896. This area was created from parts of the St Martin in the Bull Ring parish. Later, in 1901, its parish grew even bigger. It took in more land from the Christ Church parish.
The Church's End
After serving the community for many years, St Barnabas’ Church was eventually taken down. The building was demolished in 1966.
Church Organ
The church had a musical instrument called an organ. This organ was installed by a company named Bevington. You can find more details about this organ in a special list called the National Pipe Organ Register.
