Discovering St Brendan's Chapel
This ancient chapel, also called Kilbrannan Chapel or Skipness Chapel, is located close to Skipness in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was built a long time ago, around the late 1200s or early 1300s. The chapel was named after a saint called St. Brendan.
A New Chapel for the Area
Before St Brendan's Chapel was built, there was an older chapel nearby at Skipness Castle. That older chapel was named after a different saint, St. Columba. St Brendan's Chapel took its place, becoming the main religious building for the area.
The Stewarts and St. Brendan
Historians believe that the powerful Stewart family helped bring the name of St. Brendan to Skipness. This happened after the Stewarts took control of the land from another family, the Clann Suibhne, in the mid-1200s. By the 1300s, St. Brendan was very important to the Stewarts, especially because of their connection to the Isle of Bute.

St Brendan's Chapel is a very important historical place. Because of its age and history, it is protected by law. It is called a "scheduled ancient monument."
