Skipness Castle: A Look Back
Building the Castle
The main part of Skipness Castle was built a long time ago, in the early 1200s. The Clan MacSween built it. Over the next few centuries, more parts were added. These additions happened in the 1200s, 1300s, and 1500s.
Royal Visits and Battles
In 1494, King James IV of Scotland sent his soldiers to the castle. This was part of his effort to bring peace to the Scottish Isles. In 1511, a powerful leader named Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, gave Skipness to his younger son, also named Archibald Campbell.
The castle saw action during a time of big conflicts in Scotland. These were called the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. In 1646, an army led by Alasdair Mac Colla attacked the castle. During this attack, Alasdair's brother, Gilleasbuig Mac Colla, was killed in August 1646. After these events, people stopped using the castle in the 1600s.
The Green Lady's Tale
Some people say that Skipness Castle has a ghost! This ghost is known as the Green Lady of Skipness Castle. She is said to still wander around the old castle grounds.
