A Unique Church Building
St Bride's Church is one of the most easily recognized buildings in East Kilbride. It stands close to the town centre. The church was built after East Kilbride became a "new town" in 1947, following World War II. A new town is a planned community built to help house people.
Before this church was built, the people who attended services met in St. Bride's Guild Hall. This hall was in the older part of East Kilbride, known as The Village. The name "Kilbride" itself means "Church of Bride" in Scottish Gaelic. It is thought that a much older church or monastery in the village was named after St. Bride of Ireland.
Modern Design and Features
The design of St Bride's Church is considered one of the best examples of church architecture from the 20th century in Britain. It has many special features. For example, it has "light cannons" that shine light into the main worship area, called the sanctuary. From the outside, the church looks very strong and impressive with its brick walls.
Because of its special design, St Bride's Church is a Category A listed building. This means it is a very important historical or architectural building that needs to be protected. In 2016, the church had some important repair and cleaning work done to keep it in good condition.
