History of St Catherine-by-the-Sea
The church of St Catherine-by-the-Sea was built for people living in and around Holworth. These people lived far from other churches, often two miles or more away.
Around 1887, the Bishop of Salisbury, John Wordsworth, allowed Rev. Robert Linklater to hold church services. These services took place in the private chapel at Holworth House. Soon, too many people wanted to attend. So, services moved to the house's entrance hall.
Around 1904, a large kitchen in a nearby cottage was also used for services. This cottage belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Duke of Dorchester.
Building the Wooden Church
A small wooden church, named St Catherine-by-the-Sea, opened on 15 July 1906. Mr. Moore of Owermoigne did all the woodwork for the church. Mr. Walter Toms of Winfrith Newburgh completed the stone work.
In August 1906, the church received a special gift. Mr. and Mrs. E. Barnaby-Duke gave the chapel a bible. It was officially dedicated on 12 August. Rev. Pickard-Cambridge, from Warmwell, used it for the first time that evening.
In 1942, Mrs. Mary Catherine Linklater passed away. She was Rev. Linklater's wife. She left £200 to the church. She also left part of her property in Holworth to help with the church's future care.
Big Updates in 2010
In 2002, people found out that the Linklater Trust had about £200,000. This money was left by Rev. Linklater when he died in 1915. It was meant to be spent on the church.
Some people suggested tearing down the old church and building a new one. But many church members did not like this idea. They started a petition to keep the old church. In 2003, the plans to rebuild were stopped. This happened because of local people and a group called Save Britain's Heritage.
In 2010, the church got permission to make changes. They added a new section to the north and east sides of the building. The church was also greatly improved inside. A new window, designed by Simon Whistler, was put in. A new electric organ was also added.
Church Bell and Fittings
The church has a special bell. It was given by Lieutenant Commander Michael Forder of the Royal Navy. This bell used to belong to a submarine called HMS Sleuth. The Admiralty gave the bell to Commander Forder. He kept it outside his house for many years. Later, he gave it to the church as a gift.
