St Columba's Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church located in Newton, Chester. It's a special place where people gather for worship. This church was built between 1964 and 1965. You can find it in the northern part of Chester, at the corner of Plas Newton Lane and Newhall Road. Experts have called St Columba's a 'strikingly modern church' because of its unique design.

Building St Columba's Church

How the Church Was Built

In the late 1950s, a priest named Canon Francis Murphy from St Werburgh's Church, Chester in Chester had an idea. He wanted to build a new church for the Catholic community in Newton. He started collecting money to make this dream come true.

On September 6, 1964, Canon Murphy laid the first stone for the church. This is called the foundation stone. The church was designed by Francis Prichard, who was an architect. He was also the Mayor of Crosby, Merseyside.

The very first church service, called a Mass, happened on December 19, 1965. A few months later, on February 19, 1966, the church was officially opened. William Grasar, who was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury, led the opening ceremony.

The Parish Hall

Later, in 1978, a special hall for the church community was also opened. Bishop Grasar opened this hall too. It was built with help from the Manpower Services Commission. In 2012, this hall was used to host a big meeting for the British Heart Foundation.
