History of St Crida's Church

How Old is the Church?

The church of St Crida was first built a very long time ago, during the Norman period. However, most of what you see today was built in the 1400s. The church tower was first built in 1447, but it was rebuilt in 1734. For a period between 1869 and 1906, the church was not used.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The church has a tower with three levels. It also has a beautiful south aisle and a south porch. Some of the original old wooden parts inside the church have been kept. By the year 1291, the church was shaped like a cross. Parts of this older design, like the north transept and some stone walls, are still there.

In the mid-1400s, the south transept was replaced. A large south aisle was added with fancy windows. An unusually grand south porch was also built.

Special Features Inside the Church

There are many interesting things to see inside St Crida's Church.

  • The south aisle has a special "wagon roof" from the 1400s.
  • You can also find a Norman pillar piscina, which is a stone basin used for washing sacred vessels.
  • The font, used for baptisms, is made from Catacleuse stone and dates back to the 1200s.
  • There is also a chest tomb for Thomas and Margaret Denys, who passed away in 1589 and 1578.

Who Was St Crida?

Not much is known about St Crida, the person the church is named after. We do know that she was a woman. Some historians, like Peter Berresford Ellis, think she might be connected to the town of Crediton. She might even be the same person as St Grada.

Famous People Connected to the Church

William Gregor, who discovered the metal titanium, was once the rector (a type of priest) at this church. Dr. Reginald Merther-derwa was also a rector here from 1423 to 1447. In his will, he arranged for stone crosses to be built in Camborne. The five similar stone crosses found in Creed parish, including one now at Grampound church, might also have been put there because of him.

Churches in the Parish

St Crida's Church is part of a group of churches in a joint parish. This means they work together. The other churches in this group are:

The Church Organ

St Crida's Church used to have an organ made by William Hill. This organ has since been replaced. The current organ was made by William Sweetland and came from Carnkie Methodist Church. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
