St Crida's Church is an old church in Creed, Cornwall, England. It is a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very important historical building. The church is part of the Church of England.

A Look Back in Time

St Crida's Church has a long history. It was first built around the time of the Normans. This was a very long time ago! Most of the church you see today was built in the 1400s. The tower was rebuilt in 1734.

What the Church Looks Like

The church has a tower with three levels. It also has a beautiful south aisle and a south porch. Some of the old wooden parts are still there.

In 1291, the church was shaped like a cross. Parts of this old design, like the north transept and some walls, still remain. In the mid-1400s, a large south aisle was added. It has fancy windows and a very detailed south porch.

Interesting Features Inside

You can find some cool things inside the church.

  • The south aisle has a special "wagon roof" from the 1400s.
  • There is a Norman pillar piscina. This was a basin used for washing sacred vessels.
  • The font, used for baptisms, is from the 1200s and made of Catacleuse stone.
  • You can also see the chest tomb of Thomas and Margaret Denys. They passed away in 1589 and 1578.

Who Was St Crida?

The church is named after St Crida. Not much is known about her, except that she was a woman. Some people think she might be connected to Crediton. She might even be the same person as St Grada.

Famous People Connected to the Church

William Gregor, who discovered the metal titanium, was a rector here. A rector is a type of priest.

Dr Reginald Merther-derwa was also a rector from 1423 to 1447. In his will, he asked for stone crosses to be built in Camborne. There are five similar stone crosses in Creed parish. One of them is now at Grampound church. These crosses might also have been built because of him.

Church Groups

St Crida's Church is part of a joint parish. This means it shares a group with other churches. These churches are:

The Church Organ

The church used to have an organ made by William Hill. An organ is a large musical instrument. This organ has been replaced. Now, the church has an organ from William Sweetland. It came from Carnkie Methodist Church. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
