St George's Church in Wolverhampton was once a church for the Church of England. It is a very old building, listed as Grade II listed, which means it's important and protected because of its history and architecture. Today, it is no longer used as a church but has been used for other purposes.

History of St George's Church

Building the Church (1828-1830)

The church was built between 1828 and 1830. An engineer named James Morgan designed it. The building cost about £10,268 at the time. This was a lot of money back then!

The church was officially opened on September 2, 1830. The Bishop of Lichfield led the special ceremony.

Design and Features

St George's Church was built in the Grecian style of architecture. It had a tall tower and a spire. The outside was made of brick, covered with a type of stone called Tixall stone. The windows had iron frames.

The church was very large inside. It was 127 feet long and 67 feet wide. It could hold many people, up to 2038 persons. There were 706 seats in pews and 1332 free seats for people who couldn't afford to pay.

The church had galleries on the sides and at the back. These were supported by iron pillars. There was also a special painted window above the altar. This window was made by Henderson of Birmingham and cost £100.

Changes Over Time

The church stopped being used as a place of worship in 1978. Later, in 1986, it was turned into a Sainsbury's Supermarket. This was a big change for the historic building!

In 2015, the Sainsbury's store moved to a new location. The old church building then became available for other uses.

The Church Organ

About the Pipe Organ

St George's Church used to have a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. This organ was built in 1897 by a company named F.H. Browne from Deal, Kent.

Pipe organs are very large instruments that make sound by pushing air through many pipes. You can find more details about this specific organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
