St Giles' Church in Norwich, England, is a very old and important church. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it's a special historical place protected by the government. It belongs to the Church of England.

A Look Back: The History of St Giles' Church

St Giles' Church is very, very old! It was first mentioned way back in 1086 in the Domesday Book. This book was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.

The church you see today started being built much later, around 1386. People gave money to help construct it. By 1424, the tall tower was almost finished. Just six years later, in 1430, the church was ready enough to hold funerals.

Later, between 1866 and 1867, the church was carefully repaired and updated. This work was done by an architect named Richard Phipson. The tower of St Giles' Church is the tallest church tower in all of Norwich. It stands an amazing 120 feet (about 36.5 meters) high!

Important Memorials

Inside the church, you can find several special wall monuments. These are like plaques or sculptures placed on the walls to remember people who have passed away. They often tell you a bit about the person.

Some of the memorials include those for:

  • Thomas Churchman, from 1742. This one was made by Sir Henry Cheere, 1st Baronet.
  • Sir Thomas Churchman, from 1781. This memorial was created by Thomas Rawlins.
  • Philip Stannard, from 1747. This one was also made by Thomas Rawlins.

The Church Organ

St Giles' Church also has a musical instrument called an organ. This organ was built in 1896 by a company called Norman and Beard. Organs are large instruments that make sound using pipes, and they are often used during church services. You can find more details about this specific organ if you look it up on the National Pipe Organ Register.
