A Look Back: Church History

How Old Is the Church?

The church of St Helen's is very old! Parts of it were built way back in the 12th century. That's over 800 years ago! Other parts were added later in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries.

Restoring the Church (1881-1882)

Between 1881 and 1882, the church got a big makeover. A man named Frederick Josias Robinson from Derby led the work. They took down the old plastered ceiling. The stone walls and columns were cleaned up, removing their plaster.

The arch leading to the chancel (the part of the church where the altar is) was changed. The old square pews, which are like long benches, were replaced. New open seats made of pitch pine wood were put in.

Modern Upgrades and Features

Beautiful Minton tiles were laid all over the floor. The church also got central heating, which was a big deal back then! A new pulpit, where the priest gives sermons, was added. It was made from special alabaster stone found right in the church floor. It also had columns and medallions of red royal marble. The main building work was done by Robert Young of Lincoln. The church officially reopened on 2 February 1882.

The Church Organ

Past Organs

In 1976, a new organ was installed. It was made by W Hawkins of Walsall Wood. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register. However, this organ was later replaced in 1990 by an electronic organ.

The New Organ (2018)

In January 2018, a brand new organ was put into the church. This one is a large, three-manual organ made by Viscount.

Parish Status

St Helen's Church is part of a shared parish. This means it works closely with another church:
