History of St Helena

St Helena was first settled by a man named Anthony Beale. He used to live on an island called Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. There, he worked for a company called the British East India Company.

How St Helena Got Its Name

In the 1830s, Anthony Beale moved to Australia. In 1841, he started a large farm near the Plenty River. This farm included the land where St Helena is today. The cottage where the Beale family lived was named St Helena. This is how the whole area got its name.

The Rose Chapel and St Katherine's Church

After his wife, Katherine Rose, passed away, Anthony Beale built a special chapel in their garden. He named it the Rose Chapel to remember her. Anthony and Katherine Beale, along with some of their children, are buried in the graveyard next to the chapel.

The chapel and some land were later given to the Church of England. In 1842, it became known as St Katherine's Church. A bushfire sadly burned the chapel in 1957. However, drawings of the building had just been made. Because of these drawings, the chapel was rebuilt. It is still used as a church today.
