History of St Hugh's Church
How the Church Started
Before St Hugh's Church, there was a smaller Roman Catholic chapel in Lincoln. This chapel had been there since 1799. It was located where Broadgate and Silver Street meet today.
In 1870, a man named Thomas Young wanted to build a new church. He had helped build other Catholic churches in Lincolnshire. His plans for a new church in Lincoln didn't work out.
Then, in 1886, the mayor of Lincoln, Francis Clarke, offered £7,000. This money was meant to build a new church in the same spot. He hired Albert Vicars to design it. Albert Vicars had designed other important churches. Francis Clarke passed away in 1888. His family then gave £3,500 from his estate for the church. By 1892, enough money had been collected to finally start building.
Building the Church
The first stone of the church was laid on November 17, 1892. This special event was done by Bishop Edward Bagshawe from Nottingham. Building work finished the very next year. The total cost to build the church was £7,300. On December 19, 1893, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan officially opened the church.
Making it Even Better
Over the years, St Hugh's Church has been updated. In November 1897, special pictures called "stations of the cross" were added. A new entrance porch was built in 1909. Many beautiful stained-glass windows were also put in. Some of these windows were designed by Alexander Gascoyne. He also designed windows for other churches. A large window on the west side of the church was installed in 1921.
More recently, from 2008 to 2010, the inside of the church was made new. A new stone altar was added. The ceiling was also painted, making the church look even more beautiful.
What Happens at the Church?
