History of St John's Church

St John's Church was built in 1888. This means it is one year older than the city of Birmingham itself! It stands right at the top of a hill, which is why the area is called Sparkhill. The building is very important. It is a Grade II listed building. This means it is protected because of its special history and architecture.

Who Built the Church?

The church was designed by famous Birmingham architects, Martin & Chamberlain. They were well-known for building schools. One of their most famous buildings is the Birmingham School of Art. St John's Church is also a very impressive building.

The outside of the church looks like an old English Gothic style. But inside, it uses modern engineering from the 1800s. This mix of old and new makes it unique.

Growing the Parish

In 1990, another church nearby, Emmanuel Church, Sparkbrook, closed down. Part of its area then became part of St John's Church's parish. This means St John's now serves an even larger community.
