The Story of St John's Church
Building a New Church
St John's Church was built a long time ago, in 1837. When it was first built, it was called a "chapel of ease." This means it was a smaller church built to help people who lived far from the main church in their area. It made it easier for them to attend services.
Becoming Its Own Parish
The year after it was built, in 1838, Buckhurst Hill became its own "ecclesiastical district." This is an area that the church defines for its own purposes. At that time, Buckhurst Hill was part of a much older and larger church area called the "ancient parish of Chigwell."
It wasn't until 1867 that Buckhurst Hill officially became its very own separate "parish." A parish is a specific area that has its own church and a priest to look after the people living there.
Celebrating Milestones
In June 2017, the church had a big celebration. It marked its 180th anniversary! This was a special moment to remember all the years the church has served the community.
