History of St John's Church
Building the Church
St John's Church was first built in 1837. It started as a "chapel of ease." This means it was a smaller church built to help people who lived far from the main parish church. It made it easier for them to attend services.
Becoming a Separate Parish
The year after it was built, in 1838, Buckhurst Hill became its own "ecclesiastical district." This is a special area for church purposes. Before this, the area was part of the much older parish of Chigwell. Buckhurst Hill officially became a completely separate parish in 1867. This meant it had its own full church and local church leadership.
Anniversary Celebrations
In June 2017, the church celebrated a very special milestone. It marked its 180th anniversary. This was a big event for the community.
