The Parish of Woodley
A parish is an area served by a church. Woodley was first part of the Parish of Sonning. In 1881, Woodley became its own parish.
New Churches in Woodley
In the 1960s, St James' Church, Woodley, was started. It was under the care of St John's Church. A curate, a junior priest, led it until 1992.
In 1991, St John's Church helped start Emmanuel Church, Woodley. They hired a Church Army couple, Richard and Mandy Priestley, to lead it.
Changes in Church Leadership
In 1992, the single parish of Woodley became two parishes. These two parishes worked together in a Team Ministry. The Parish of St John the Evangelist included St John's Church and Emmanuel Church. The new Parish of Southlake included St James Church. The curate at St James, Rev. Paul Roberts, became a Team Vicar. The Team Rector, based at St John the Evangelist Church, led all the clergy for both parishes.
Woodley Airfield Church was started in 1993. Both St John's Church and Christ Church worked together to create it. Airfield Church is an ecumenical church. This means it has leaders from different Christian groups. These include the Church of England, Methodist, and URC.
After Rev. Ann Douglas left in 2006, the way the churches worked together was reviewed. During this time, Rev. Jon Honour, who was a Team Vicar at Emmanuel Church, became the Acting Priest-in-Charge of St John's Church. He was helped by Rev. Jason Reid.
In 2007, the church councils (called PCCs) of St John's and St James' churches decided to change how they worked together. They ended the Team Ministry and started a Group Ministry. Rev. Marquez became the Priest in Charge in March 2008.
Rev. Mark Nam became the new Vicar for St John's Church in May 2024.
All three Anglican Churches in Woodley are part of "Churches Together in Woodley." This group helps different churches in the area work together.
