The Parish of Woodley's History
Originally, Woodley was part of a larger church area called the Parish of Sonning. In 1881, Woodley became its own separate Parish. This meant it had its own church and leaders.
New Churches in Woodley
In the 1960s, another church called St James' Church was started in Woodley. It was connected to St John's Church. A curate (a type of church leader) helped lead it until 1992.
In 1991, St John's Church helped start another new church called Emmanuel Church, Woodley. This was an exciting time for the church community.
Changes in Church Leadership
In 1992, the single Parish of Woodley was split into two parishes. These two parishes worked together in a "Team Ministry." The Parish of St John the Evangelist included St John's Church and Emmanuel Church. The new Parish of Southlake included St James Church. The main leader, called the Team Rector, was based at St John the Evangelist Church. This person led all the church leaders for both parishes.
In 1993, Woodley Airfield Church was started. This church was a joint effort between St John's Church and Christ Church. Airfield Church is special because it has leaders from different Christian groups. These include the Church of England, Methodist, and URC.
Working Together in Woodley
Today, all four Anglican churches in Woodley work together. They are part of a group called Churches Together in Woodley. This group helps them cooperate on different projects and events.
