History of St Joseph's Church
Early Catholic Community in Stockport
A long time ago, in the late 1700s, Catholic people in Stockport didn't have their own church. Priests from Manchester would visit them. In 1798, a priest named Father James Blundell held church services in a house. Then, in 1803, a small, permanent chapel was built. It was named St Philip and St James.
Growing Community and New Buildings
During the early 1800s, many new workers came to Stockport for the mills. This meant more Catholic families moved to the area. By 1845, a priest would travel from the chapel to the center of Stockport. He would hold services in a temporary school building. In 1858, new schools were built on Tatton Street. These schools were designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield and George Goldie.
Building the Church
The foundation stone for St Joseph's Church was laid in 1861. This was done by William Turner, who was the Bishop of Salford. The church was completed in 1862. An artist named M. E. Hadfield made a painting of the church's inside. This painting still hangs in the church today. Later, in 1888, an industrial school was built next to the church. It helped teach skills to young people.
Church Services
St Joseph's Church holds two Sunday Masses each week. One service is on Saturday evening at 5:00 PM. The other service is on Sunday morning at 11:30 AM.
