History of St Joseph's Church
Early Catholic Community
In the late 1700s, Catholic people in Stockport went to priests from Manchester for church services. Around 1798, a priest named Father James Blundell held Mass in a house on Windmill Street.
In 1803, the community built a permanent chapel on Chapel Street. They called it St Philip and St James. As more workers came to Stockport's mills in the early 1800s, the number of Catholic churchgoers grew.
Building the New Church
By 1845, a priest from the chapel would travel to the center of Stockport to hold Mass in a temporary school. This school was located in Parson's Yard. Later, in 1858, new schools were built on Tatton Street. These schools were designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield and George Goldie.
The foundation stone for St Joseph's Church was laid in 1861. This important step was done by William Turner, who was the Bishop of Salford at the time. The church was completed in 1862.
A special watercolour painting of the church's interior was made in 1862 by M. E. Hadfield. This painting now hangs inside the church, at the west end of the nave.
Church Services
St Joseph's Church holds two Sunday Masses each week. These services are held at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 11:30 AM on Sunday.
